In a custom basic to northern Wisconsin in the seventeenth century, a Menominee chasing gathering of eight to ten men set out to chase along the Peshtigo River. This particular morning was remarkable in light of the fact that the gathering conveyed guns away from home for the first time. The fervor occasioned by this debut explosive chase was increased by the information that manitou(spirit) had guided it. One of the trackers conjured a fantasy in which spirits guided him to get a rifle and ammo from the white men who exchanged close by Green Bay. He and his fellow obeyed the grave proclamation of the soul world, and their families prepared for a celebratory blowout fully expecting an effective hunt. Unable to anticipate the day’s occasions, the Menominees didn’t realize that they were, truth be told, getting ready for a grieving feast.
