Book Name: Cod Biography

Writer: MARK KURLANSKY

These are the anglers who stand guard over the cod stocks off the

headlands of North America, the fishermen who went to the ocean yet

overlooked their pencil. Sam Lee, wearing dark rain boots and a red

flotation coat made significantly more brilliant by its novelty, drives his

late-model pickup truck through the last murk of night, down to the

wharves that loosen up to where the water is profound enough for a

shallow fishing dinghy. The warehouse, conference centers, and tackle

shops are totally constructed out over the shallow water on braces. This has

liberated uptight piece of level land where the lofty little mountains stop

not long before the water’s edge. The level territory had once been expected

to spread out a great many spread and salted cod for drying in the open air.

The salting had halted right around thirty years before, but Petty Harbor

despite everything resembles a packed little port, its hardly any business

structures crunched in along the water, while houses disperse up onto the

beginnings of the slopes. At the wharves, Sam gets together with Leonard

Stack and Bernard Chafe conveying spotlights and kidding aboutSam’s new

coat, protecting their eyes from its shocking brilliance.
