Book Name: Marcel Mauss Biography
Writer: Marcel Fournier
Indeed, even IN HIS EARLY YEARS, everybody consequently related Marcel
Mauss with Émile Durkheim, whom Mauss’s colleagues wickedly called “the
uncle.” As Henri Lévy-Bruhl notes, Durkheim not exclusively was Mauss’
instructor and a “brilliant teacher” but at the same time was his mom’s
brother.1 In his correspondence with his companions, Mauss introduced
himself as “the nephew” and alluded continually to “the uncle,” “Durkheim,”
or sim-utilize “D.” “The uncle is proceeding with his courses . . . he gets
drained and is worn out”; “the uncle is improving yet is as yet
apprehensive.” The connection between the nephew and his “great uncle”
was strong, in view of family relationship, scholarly Effi ni-ties, and work in
common. In the “Vôôôges” Like Durkheim, Marcel Mauss was conceived in
the town of Épinal. They were fourteen years separated: the uncle was
conceived April 15, 1858; the nephew, May 10, 1872.
