It was an excellent evening of late-fall, the air sufficiently sharp to be invigorating after the sweltering room and the smelling railroad carriage. The breeze, which had recently turned a point or two north of west, had blown the sky away from all cloud spare a light speck or two which went quickly down the sky. There was a youthful moon most of the way up the sky, and as the home-farer saw it, tangled in the parts of a tall old elm, he could scant bring to his psyche the decrepit London suburb where he was, and he felt as though he were in a wonderful nation place- – pleasanter, without a doubt, than the profound nation was as he had known it.
