she said. “It isn’t my mystery. Yet, you’re included more than you know. Actually – ” She stopped, not seeing me, yet giving the edge of the rug a delicate glare. “Truth be told, I’d prefer to give you something. I followed her out into the lobby, down a trip of steps and afterward into a major room, serenely outfitted. An examination, I thought. In any case, the shelves were vacant now and everything was daintily recorded with dust.

“The chimney, Mr. Cortland,” Dr. Essen stated, pointing.
