What follows fUlfills A quest that started at the University of Chicago, where, as an undergrad move from Amherst College, I joined up with the Islamic Civilization grouping and composed a paper on Islam in early West Africa. Evaluated a “C-” by an alumni aide who found the very idea “questionable,” the paper was for no good reason to me subsequently assessed by the course teacher, John E. Woods, who, in changing the evaluation to an “A-,” advised me that, if genuine, I would need to learn Arabic. It was a critical intervention.
