I WENT TO WORK IN MOSCOW IN August 1988 as a youthful correspondent for the Reuters news office. My significant other, Roberta, and I showed up in the city after a road trip across Europe and through Ukraine that took us unsafely near Chernobyl atomic plant, which had detonated two years sooner. Our sparkling new Volvo domain vehicle was heaped so high with provisions that when we opened the secondary passages they started to course out. Buried underneath the mix of garments and shoes and family unit apparatuses were in excess of a hundred containers of wine. I had been cautioned by my future partners that it was hard to track down any wine – or anything much else so far as that is concerned – in Russian shops. They were right.
