The book is an assortment of nine short stories telling the story of three ages of an exceptionally useless family previously, during, and after a mechanical peculiarity. It was initially composed as a progression of novelettes and novellas, all distributed in Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine in the period 2001 to 2004.
The initial three stories follow the character of “adventure altruist” Manfred Macx beginning in the mid 21st Century, the second three stories follow his girl Amber, and the last three spotlight to a great extent on her child Sirhan in the totally changed world toward the century’s end.
