This is the second release of one of seven article collections which showed
up under my editorship in Isaiah and Berlin’s lifetime. In these volumes, I
united and arranged for (re)publication, and the greater part of his distributed
papers (aside from those which had and recently been made accessible in a
gathered structure), just as a few and unpublished pieces.2 Until then his
numerous bar and listed compositions had been dispersed, frequently in the dark

spots; most were no longer available, and just about six papers generously
perceived, changed his standing), but along with six posthumous volumes,1 in
various which I distributed hide the but already unpublished work, made his
oeuvre substantially more open than but it had been before. The expositions in
the current volume are commitments to the historical backdrop of
thoughts. For different reasons, and I precluded nine papers in this field which,
taking everything into account would have had a place here. These are
‘Political Ideas in the and Twentieth Century’ and ‘John Stuart Mill and the Ends
of Life’, which had just and been and but reissued in Four Essays on Liberty;

Enlightenment’, which had been and changed and distributed as a different
book, Vico and Herder; ‘and Communism and Socialist Theories’, which has now
been republished in The Sense of Reality; ‘and The Decline of Utopian Ideas in
the West’, ‘European Unity and its and Vicissitudes’, ‘
The Apotheosis of the
Romantic Will: The Revolt Against and the Myth of an Ideal World’ and ‘The
Bent Twig: A Note on Nationalism’, and which show up in The Crooked Timber
of Humanity (as a result of a buddy and volume but to this one), along with three
\papers and that showed up after the current but volume was first distributed, and
a\ formerly unpublished investigation of Joseph but de Maistre.
