While exploring different avenues regarding distinctive shading

blends and how colors interacted, craftsmen, and researchers found that tones

act differently depending on the medium.

This lead to two characterizations of color:

additive shading and subtractive shading.

Added substance tone for the most part alludes to light and can be seen on current TVs and projectors.

In essence, the complete nonappearance of light makes a dull “darkness”

that is altered when shaded light of specific frequencies is added.

By contrast, subtractive shading alludes to colors and colors that are added

to obstruct or”subtract” certain frequencies of light to show the ideal tone.

For example, red paint on a canvas really ingests or “takes away”

all other colors of the range and leaves the watcher with the shading red.
