ate. Doris gazed at it, her hand to her mouth. “My God, what is it?” She gazed toward him, brilliant looked at.
“All things considered, open it.”
Doris tore the lace and paper from the square bundle with her sharp nails, her chest rising and falling. Larry stood watching her as she lifted the cover. He lit a cigarette and inclined toward the divider.
“A cuckoo clock!” Doris cried. “A genuine old cuckoo clock like my mom had.” She turned the clock again and again. “Much the same as my mom had, when Pete was as yet alive.” Her eyes shone with tears.
