1937, a gangling, light, adolescent understudy from Florida

BibleInstitute arranged to lecture a message. Never had he done this

before. Young Billy Graham had gone with the scholastic senior member of

the Institute, the Reverend John Minder, and his family on a short

excursion. Minder’s companion, the Reverend Cecil Underwood, low

maintenance evangelist and painter in the little town of Bostwick,

welcomed Minder with an expected invitation to lecture the message that

night at his little church. Minderdeferred, declaring to the amazement of

both Underwood and Billy himself that the youthful understudy would

lecture that evening.Although shocked by the unforeseen development,

Billy was not absolutely prepared for this second. All through his youth he

had discussed Bible passages and asked out loud before his family and at

the chapel.
