blended race. Walter Newton’s dad was a white man who had assaulted his
dark mother. In this way, neighborhood whites knew his dad, cousins,
aunties, and blood family members, and keeping in mind that they
probably won’t have wavered to execute an individual of color, they may
have been hesitant to shed his white family’s blood.4The Newtons moved to
Oakland in 1945, following the way of many dark families relocating from
the South to the urban areas of the North and West to fill the positions in
the shipyards and ventures that opened up with the beginning of World
War II.
