During the 1950s, Santiago de Chile was freezing cold. The houses didna

have focal warming, and the delightful trees that presently add a touch of

green to the Chilean capital had not yet been planted. The world was

experiencing significant social and political change, yet in Santiago time

seemed to be stopping. Men wore calm formal outfits and acted with a

convention that Chilean culture took a long time to shake off. Santiago was

a gray city.Into this setting of cement and fog, Roberto Bolaño was

conceived, on April 28, 1953. The child of the truck driver and expert fighter

LeónBolaño and grade teacher Victoria Ávalos, he was conveyed ina Seguro

Social center a couple of squares from Recoleta Avenue, where his fatherly

grandparents lived.Victoria and León’s firstborn youngster didn’t spend

quite a while in the city.Soon after his introduction to the world, the family

moved to Valparaíso, around seventy miles from Santiago. Valparaíso is a

significant city, Chile’s third-biggest, and a thriving seaport. As Bolaño later

reviewed, he was conceived in Santiago but never lived in Santiago.
