The Experiencing childhood in the last part of the 1960s and mid-1970s, I
sometimes heard mention of Ken Eather, an older man, a removed relative
who had been a fighter—a significant one actually. Despite the fact that I
saw him from separation during Sydney Anzac Day marches, I had not
contemplated him, especially until one day in1973. In 6th grade at Maitland
Primary School, I sneaked away from school at noon with a gathering of
companions and got down to the local corner shop to spend our lunch cash
on lollies. We raced into the shop in a raucous gathering and one of my
companions shouted out, ‘What are you getting, Eather?’ On hearing this
the businessperson whirled around and gazed at me.
