I composed this book to keep a guarantee I made to a twelve-year-old kid in
1959. The little fellow had just two recollections of his organic dad. He
recalled being beaten with a belt at six years old since he wouldn’t drink his
milk. Also, he remembered his mom crying on account of the abuse. One
day, when he was seven, his natural dad was no more.
Inspiration to Live Your Magic
There was no
explanation. The kid didn’t care. A barely any years after the fact, his mom
wedded another man, who turned into his stepfather and who later
embraced the kid. This man was benevolent and strong, however, he was a
heavy drinker. Many nights, their minimalistic living space was loaded up
with shouting and contending, for the most part about cash and alcohol,
which became stronger as the drinking continued. One such night in
winter, the kid lay trembling in his bed in the open basement. There were
no shades on the little windows and surrounding him the laundry was
holding tight lines to dry. A vehicle passed by and the headlights shone
through the windows, making shadow beasts of the clothing. The kid pulled
the covers over his head and withdrew into his fantasies. That night, he
made a guarantee to himself: in the event that he ever figured out how to
make his fantasies work out, he would share what he had realized with
others. That little fellow was me. I had three dreams: to discover a
sweetheart and have an adoring family; to go into business and bring in
cash; and to venture to every part of the world.
