Book Name: John Adams
Writer: David McCullough
Neglected, almost boring light of a New England winter, two men riding a
horse ventured to every part of the coast street beneath Boston, traveling
north. A foot or a greater amount of snow secured the scene, the leftovers of
a Christmas storm that had covered Massachusetts from one finish of the
region to the next. Underneath the day off, long stretches of serious cool,
the ground was ice cold all the way through to a profundity of two feet.
Stuffed ice in the street, grooves as hard as iron, made the going dangerous,
and the riders, aware of the ponies, kept at a walk. Nothing about the brutal
scene varied from different winters. Nor was there anything to recognize
the two riders, no indications of rank or title, no liveried entourage raising
the back. It may have been any year and they could have been anyone
conquering the climate for quite a few reasons.
