Book Name: Kierkegaard Biography
Writer: Alastair Hannay
ONE AIMof a history of a renowned scholarly figure is to put its subject’s
works in their authentic and social setting. Another, closer to home, is to see
the works with regards to their creator’s own intellectual improvement.
However, we should remember that it is the bios of the subject, and not of
the works, that the biographer must concentrate on. Obviously enough, for
it is on the grounds that the works themselves are still alive, thus don’t fit
the bill for life story, that we are keen on their author. However, it is on the
grounds that they actually live that we are interested in the life of their
author. What is the exact connection between works and a day to day
existence that permits biography to be on the double both scholarly and life
story? Must the biographer’s enthusiasm for an author and scholar be kept
to those viewpoints of the life that figuratively speaking produce the works?
Maybe, yet then of course the real beginnings of a scholar’s thoughts go a lot
further back than to the writer’s schooldays or birth; they can be followed
as far back as the early histories of the thoughts which the works typify.
