Our Majesty, Your Royal Highnesses, Ladies and Gentlemen, The Academy
of Sciences has made plans to grant the current year’s Nobel Prize for
physics to the world-renowned Dutch physicist, Johannes Diderik van der
Waals for his investigations of the physical condition of fluids and gases. As
far back as in his debut paper <<The connection among the liquid and the
vaporous state>>, Van der Waals showed the issue to which he was to give
his labor of love which actually guarantees his consideration today. In the
exposition to which I have alluded, he tried to represent the discrepancies
from the basic gas laws which happen at genuinely high pressures. He was
directed to the presumption that these errors are somewhat associate with
the space involved by the gas atoms themselves, and incompletely with the
fascination which the particles apply on each other, attributable to which
the pressure following up on the inside of the gas is more prominent than
the external pressure.
