Howard Hathaway Aiken was a pioneer in the development of programmed ascertaining machines. Born on March 8, 1900, in Hoboken, New Jersey, he experienced childhood in Indianapolis, Indiana. He pursued his enthusiasm for electrical design by working at a service organization while in secondary school. Aiken then earned a B.A. degree in electrical engineering in 1923 at the University of Wisconsin.
