Description
The first Rhode Island Detached Militia under the order of ColonelAmbrose E. Burnside has left the state for the seat of war. Military spirit runs high and I, just the same as the other youngsters, feel that it is my duty to serve in the field. I made a decent attempt to go with the First Regiment, but my mother being a widow and having two more youthful siblings to help, I resisted the tendency to enroll. Right now I am nineteen years of age and for a long time have been utilized at the workplace of Frederick MillerEsq., Reed and Harness Manufacturers, no. 92 Canal Street, Providenceas an assistant. My mom lives in the town of Pawtuxet, and with her, and my sister and two siblings I spend my Sundays. Late in the long stretch of April Governor Sprague gave a request stating that the second Rhode Island Volunteers would be promptly enrolled for three years administration and called upon the residents to enroll. Saturday night I visited my home and laid the issue before my mom. She at once refused her assent and giving as an explanation that I was her solitary help, I was compelled to guarantee that I would stay at home until such time as he may agree to my enrolling. The following Sunday was a sad one at our home.
