Description

1734–1750The Quakers of Devonshire lived as ranchers and weavers in villas and mountain valleys. They had split away from the official church and been punished by fines and alienation, some of the time by jail and whippings. Quakers they couldn’t hold office or vote. As peaceful objectors, it was against their faith to serve in the military or naval force. They couldn’t go to class or train for the learned callings. As supporters of George Fox, they called themselves Friends, and they didn’t have a pecking order of ministry ritualized administration.
