That night in Takata, close to the northwest shoreline of Japan, there was a supper party in an eatery. Formally dressed men with shaved heads and stockinged feet sat leg over leg on the tangling floor and toasted one another, and chuckled a decent arrangement and sang walking melodies. They were youthful and chipper. It wasn’t an expound or expensive gathering; only a normal supper, a goodbye motion from the Japanese officers of the town battalion for three Chinese faithful comrades.
