Description

The thought for this book began in a cooperation of European and

American researchers inspired by instruction and common society, which was

supported to a limited extent by a Trans-Coop award from the German—American

Scholarly Council (GAAC). The venture brought about two meeting in

1997 and 1998, the first in Boston facilitated by the Institute for Economic

Culture at Boston University, the second in Göttingen, Germany, in

1998 facilitated by the Center for Europe-and North-America Studies at

the University of Göttingen. We express gratitude toward Charles Glenn and Peter

L.Berger in Boston, and Horst Kern and Peter Loesche in Göttingen for

liberal help and friendliness. On account of our editors at

Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Naomi Silverman and Lori Hawver, and

to Bonnie Johnson and Huaying Zhang (at Penn State and SUNY

Albany, separately) whose aptitude and tolerance helped see this undertaking

all the way to the finish.
