His fatherly granddad, likewise called Abraham Lincoln, was murdered when he was 42 years of age. This Lincoln, a Virginian, had been a commander in the militia during the Revolution, assisting with building wilderness strongholds. As the war wound down, he moved with his family to Kentucky. One day in 1786 he was in his field with his three youthful children when an Indian shot him from the front of the trees. One kid ran for help; another, the oldest, ran for a firearm.
