I may never have composed this book had I not spent the spring term of 1998 at the University of California at Berkeley. The college had requested that I educate a course on the historical backdrop of environmentalism, till then the central focal point of my research and composing. However, I was drained with the subject; I recommended that I instead run a class called ‘Contentions with Gandhi’.At the time, Gandhi’s vision of a comprehensive, lenient India was being threatened by the two finishes of the political range. From the right, a coalition of Hindu associations (known as the Sangh Parivar) forcefully pushed for a theocratic express, a task Gandhi had restricted for his entire life.
