One mechanical swam in the water. Its legs spread straight out and rose and fell like paddles as it impelled itself forward.
Little pulled at my sleeve and I let her guide me down the slope towards the lake. At the base, she delivered me and vanished into an opening in the pit divider. I looked after her, and when my eyes changed in accordance with the faint light, I saw racks of legs, sensor balls, and different parts for the mechanicals.
“I got batteries,” she said when she came out. She had untucked her shirt and maneuvered the tails into a sack to convey something hefty.
