The center of this monograph comprises of the arrangement of Waynflete Lectures conveyed at Magdalen College Oxford, in February and March 2006. I am very thankful to the President and Fellows for the encouragement to give those talks, and for granting me a Visiting Fellowship. I am likewise significantly obligated both to the Fellows, particularly Professor Laurence Brockliss and Dr. Christine Ferdinand, and to the next recognized individuals from the crowd, particularly Sir Keith Thomas, Professor John Bossy, Professor Diarmaid MacCulloch and Dr. Martin Ingram, for their accommodating remarks and proposals for additional perusing.
