The essential hotspot for the data contained in this book is James Baldwin himself. I met Baldwin in 1961 during his first visit to Istanbul, where I was working as an instructor. We saw each other again when he returned to Istanbul during 1962 and 1963. At the point when I started graduate work at New York University in1963, Baldwin employed me as a low maintenance secretary responsible for arranging his manuscripts and papers. Inevitably I did some correspondence and examination for him and went with him on address trips.
