The four enduring offspring of Bronislawa Sklodowska and WladyslawSklodowski1gathered around their gravely sick mother on May 8, 1878. Bronislawa’s body was assaulted by tuberculosis she had contracted some time before 1871 when her most youthful little girl, Maria (later to be known as Marie Curie), was just four years of age. As of now the only known medicines for tuberculosis were rest, restorative waters, and a healthy climate.2Bronislawa went through two years of Maria’s youth away from the family home in Warsaw, Poland, taking the “fix” in a French spa. Indeed, even before their mom’s disorder and extreme passing, Maria’s kidhood had been troublesome.
