MANY friends have helped me recorded as a hard copy of this book. Some are dead thus distinguished that I barely dare name them, yet nobody can peruse or compose without being unendingly in the obligation of Defoe, Sir Thomas Browne, Sterne, Sir Walter Scott, Lord Macaulay, Emily Bront?, De Quincey, and Walter Pater,— to name the principal that ring a bell. Others are alive, and however maybe as distinguished in their own particular manner, are less imposing for that very explanation.
