Like most books, this one started with an individual encounter. In the early 1980s, when I chose to compose another account of Sylvia Plath, the American artist and fiction author whose Ariel and The Bell Jar have lastingly affected both American writing and American women’s lives, I never imagined I was going to go through what would appear to be a character change.
