The Late-fall IN 54 BC: a normally wet, dim November day in eastern Belgium.In a Roman military camp on the site of advanced Tongres, near where the borders of Belgium, Holland, and Germany currently meet, a committee of war was underway. One full army – ten companions notionally of 500 men each – and five additional partners had been brigaded together in winter quarters here, just to the west of the Rhine in the region of a little Germanic-talking clan called the Burnes.
