The young lady’s body hardened. Her earthy colored eyes broadened with unexpected fear, and her little face went pale. She slipped rapidly from the stool, attracting her breath with such a wheeze. The hand that held the programmed shuddered a bit.

“What’s wrong?” Larry cried.

“I thought- – ” she wheezed, “I think I see something in the beam! The machine-beast is returning!”

Her lips fixed. She lifted the little programmed and started to shoot into the mainstay of red fire alongside the small, turning globe.

Larry, observing rigidly, saw an inquisitive, winged creature like something rippling about in the red beam, quickly becoming bigger!
