As its title proposes, the book is apparently Tristram’s portrayal of his biography. In any case, it is one of the focal jokes of the novel that he can’t clarify anything just, that he should make logical redirections to add setting and shading to his story, to the degree that we don’t arrive at Tristram’s own introduction to the world until Volume III.
