I found this delectably inauspicious short story during my now-yearly Project Gutenberg chase for a book title beginning with X to finish my Alphabet Soup understanding test. (A year ago I chose Xingu by Edith Wharton.) Leiber’s story is set in a modern American city where individuals are not, at this point partitioned by political connection, however by whether they get around by walking or by wheel.
