Book Name: Robert Redford Biography
Writer: Michael Feeney Callan
America sprouted on a fantasy, united in the pages of the
DemocraticReview in 1845 when writer John O’Sullivan composed that it
was “our manifest destiny to overspread the landmass allocated by
Providence for the free development of our yearly duplicating millions.”
Prior to that point, “America” existed in a cluster of meagerly populated
states that were outgrowths of the EastCoast Dutch and British settlements.
Over the Appalachian separation was limbo and the explorers who initially
set out on the Oregon Trail composed thoughtfully of “going home to
America.” Within two centuries, the wild was taken from the native
Americans, however, its settlement was mythologized in cheerful
imaginings brought by the tales of Owen Wister and the artistic creations of
Frederic Remington. In truth, there were not many ranchers, less than
10,000 at their pinnacle and pioneers who journeyed west voyaged not in
Conestoga carts, yet on draylikeprairie clippers pulled by bulls. Dreams are
intrinsic in human instinct, and much of the American scene, unaltered for
centuries until the incredible driveways in the nineteenth century, incited
paradise and hell.California, particularly, enlivened paradise.
