Book Name: Secret Formula Biography
Writer: FREDERICK ALLEN
It took two men to concoct Coca-Cola, and they could scarcely have been
more different. With his full, streaming dark facial hair and dim eyes, John
Stith Pemberton was a familiar figure in the city of Atlanta in the years
after the Civil War. A handsome man, a Confederate veteran and war saint,
“Doc” Pemberton was a pharmacist who got a kick out of the chance to
fiddle with patent prescriptions. In the spring of 1886, stirring up the
substance of a forty-gallon metal pot with a wooden paddle, brewed the
main clump of a dull, sweet syrup intended to be served with carbonated
water and sold at the city’s soft drink wellsprings.
