Who were these odd people? the priests asked
each other. What did they want? Their questions were before long replied.
With cries, the men from the boat jumped shorewards, employing lances
and tomahawks. Priests who attempted to stop them were slashed down.
Others were caught, shackled, and conveyed off the boat. Surges of blood
ran over the stones and blended with the uncaring sea. The intruders
moved through the settlement, holding onto valuable relics—not for their
strict worth but rather for their material worth.
