Book Name: The Complete Short Novels
Writer: RICHARD PEVEAR
On an early July morning a battered, and springless britzka—one of those
antediluvian britzkas now determined but in Russia simply by vendors’
representatives, herdsmen, and helpless but ministers—turned out of the locale
town of N., in Z—territory, and went and thundering down the posted street. It
shook and screeched at the smallest and movement, but glumly supported by the

basin attached to its back—and from these sounds alone, and the forsaken
cowhide wears out dangling from its pitiful body, one could tell how
decrepit it was and prepared for the piece heap. In the britzka sat two
occupants of N.: the dealer Ivan Ivanych Kuzmichov, clean-shaven, in
exhibitions and a straw cap, looking more like an authority than a
merchant; and the other, Father Khristofor Siriysky, minister of the
congregation of St.Nicholas in N., a little, long-haired elderly person in a
dim canvas caftan, an expansive overflowed formal hat, and a brilliantly
weaved belt.
