Book Name: The Evil Hours Biography
Writer: David J. Morris
These were the words I wrote in my diary on October 9, 2007, the day
preceding I was nearly killed by a side of the road bomb in Baghdad. The
last line I wrote in the days a while later. Afterward, I returned and
underlined it in an alternate hued ink, as if to stress that I had returned to it
from an alternate perspective. As though I were leaving a sign for some
future rendition of myself.I was in Iraq for my third detailing trip and had
gone out on a watch with some officers from the First Infantry Division into
Saydia, an area that seemed, in any event on a superficial level, to be
moderately quiet. On our way back inside the wire, one of the fighters
inquired as to whether I’d actually been exploded before.I thought about
the inquiry for a second, and afterward, as the quietness developed, I
sensed that something was out of order. The words came ungracefully as I
explained that while I had spent the late spring before in Ramadi, by then
the deadliest city in Iraq, I was as yet a virgin in that specific area.
