The Oxford History of Hinduism By PATRICK OLIVELLE

Book Name: The Oxford History of Hinduism

Writer: PATRICK OLIVELLE

Given the centrality of Dharmaśāstra in the Hindu convention for over two

millennia, this is a book that must be composed. Left to our own devices,

however, this is a book that we couldn’t have ever embraced. The daunting

task of composing a background marked by Dharmaśāstra under the

shadow of the pioneering and all-encompassing work of P. V. Kane would

have caused us to dither. Thus, thanks are due in the first spot to Gavin

Flood, who, as the overall proofreader of the new Oxford History of

Hinduism, welcomed us to compose this as a volume in the series, and to

Tom Perridge, the supervisor at Oxford who, alongside Gavin, launched the

series. It was obvious from the beginning this was a book both of us couldn’t

write-on our own, in any event not inside a specified time period.
