No prelude appeared necessary when this book first appeared. That was
maybe a mistake. Little in history is self-
obvious, significantly fewer the intentions of those who attempt to compose
it. A more explicit proclamation of what I was attempting, and not
attempting, to achieve may have given readers a superior thought of what
to expect—for better or worse. A second edition provides the open door to
rectify the exclusion and to explain any progressions now incorporated.
It is a past filled with theFrench Revolution and not simply of the
Revolution in France. Only here and there has an upheaval in one nation
had such widespread repercussions past its borders; and the Revolution
turn was profoundly influenced how outsiders responded to it. The more
extensive dimension, therefore, appeared to me essential a piece of the story. Written to show up for the
bicentenary of the Revolution in 1989, as an Oxford History book was
considered as a narrative for general readers rather than the student
textbook it has nevertheless largely become. In deference that destiny,
notwithstanding, I have now extended the short bibliography of the first-
edition into a wide introduction to the historiography of the subject—in
spite of the fact that it stays a
the index which less utilitarian perusers can bypass they like.
