Book Name: The Real Lolita
Writer: Sarah Weinman
Sally Horner strolled into the Woolworth’s on Broadway and Federal in
Camden, New Jersey, to take a five-penny journal. She’d been set out to by
the clique of young ladies she urgently needed to join. Sally had taken
nothing in her life; normally she went to that specific five-and-dime for
school supplies and her most loved sweets. The coterie revealed to her it
would be simple. No one would presume a girl like Sally, a fifth-grade honor
student and leader of the Junior Red CrossClub at Northeast School, to be a
cheat. In spite of her mounting fear at breaking the law, she trusted them.
She had no clue a straightforward demonstration of shoplifting on an
anarch evening in 1948 would devastate her life. Once inside Woolworth’s,
Sally went after the principal journal she spied on the sparkling white
nickel counter. She stuffed it into her pack and strolled away, careful to look
straight ahead to the leave entryway. Before she could cross the threshold to
opportunity, she felt a hand snatch her arm. Sally gazed upward. A slim,
peddle confronted man lingered over her, iron-gray hair underneath a
wide-overflowed fedora, eyes moving among blue and dark.
