I met Fordyce Mitchel in January 1983 in Princeton at the Institute for
Advanced Study where we both spent the spring term. I had caught wind of
this educated scholar and read the majority of his investigations in
Athenian history and epigraphy.We jumped on very well and turned out to
be dear companions or, rather, developed a sort of uncle-nephew
relationship. He was 64, I was 42, and after only fourteen days he could say,
“Now, Mogens, tune in to Uncle Mitch . . .” During the day we discussed
fourth-century Athens, yet in the nighttimes over a bottle of good red wine
(typically a Robert Mondavi), he told me about the American South and me
him about what the world looked like from a Scandinavian viewpoint. We
were not alone the structure, and out of these nighttimes created what
became the casual B-Building classes.
