Book Name: The Silk Roads
Writer: PETER FRANKOPAN
As a kid, one of my most valued belongings was a huge guide to the world.
It was nailed to the divider by my bed, and I would gaze at it consistently
before I went to rest. After a short time, I had remembered the names and
areas of all the countries, noticing their capital urban communities, just as
the seas and oceans, and the rivers that streamed into them; the names of
significant mountain ranges and deserts, written in earnest italics, excited
with experience and danger. By the time I was an adolescent, I had gotten
uncomfortable with the relentlessly narrow geographic focal point of my
classes at school, which thought exclusively on western Europe and the
United States and left the majority of the remainder of the world
untouched. We had been educated about the Romans in Britain; the
Norman conquest of 1066; Henry VIII and the Tudors; the American War of
independence; Victorian industrialization; the clash of the Somme; and the
rise and fall of Nazi Germany.
