The Sound of Things Falling A Novel By Juan Gabriel Vasquez

Book Name: The Sound of Things Falling A Novel

Writer: Juan Gabriel Vasquez

The main hippopotamus, a male the shade of dark pearls gauging a ton and

a half was shot dead in the center of 2009. He’d got away from two years

before from Pablo Escobar’s old zoo in the Magdalena Valley, and during

that time of freedom had decimated crops, attacked drinking box, alarmed

anglers, and even assaulted the reproducing bulls at a cows farm. The

marksmen who got up with him shot him once in the head and again in the

heart (with .375-caliber bullets since hippopotamus skin is thick); they

presented with the dead body, the great dull wrinkled mass, and as of late

fallen shooting star; and there, before the first cameras and spectators,

underneath a ceiba tree that shielded them from the harsh sun, they

clarified that the heaviness of the creature would forestall them from

transporting him entirely, and quickly started cutting him up. I was in my

apartment in Bogotá, 250 or so kilometers south when I saw the picture for

the first time, printed across a large portion of a page of public news-

magazine.
