The Upstairs Wife By Rafia Zakaria

Book Name: The Upstairs Wife

Writer: Rafia Zakaria

It was a gentle winter evening whose spring-like blossom had roused many

to leave their banned windows partially open. Through the metal screen,

the sounds of kids playing, of far off sellers and vehicle horns and the

smells of fumes vapor and the neighbor’s cooking all drifted in. My mother,

grandma, and I kept an awkward vigil in our living room by phone. We

had gone through the evening in supplication, because my auntie’s

significant other, Uncle Sohail, had been raced to the emergency clinic

earlier that day subsequent to enduring an abrupt stroke. Fascinated in this

manner, we had not thought to turn on the TV or check the news. Benazir

Bhutto, herself a girl of Karachi and an installation on the city political

scene, was the freest lady we knew. A couple of days sooner she had got

back to Pakistan following a six-year oust. All week Pakistan’s news

channels had been covering information on a meeting she was to address

that evening in Rawalpindi. It has probably been only a short while after 6

p.m. when the phone rang through the quietness of the parlor. It is

almost dusk, I thought; soon we will hear the call to prayer.
