Three Novels of Ancient Egypt By Naguib Mahfouz

Book Name: Three Novels of Ancient Egypt

Writer: Naguib Mahfouz

THE POSSESSOR of Divine Grandeur and Lordly Awe, Khufu, child of

Khnum, reclined on his plated sofa, on the overhang of the

antechamberoverlooking his lavish and distant nursery. This heaven was

immortal Memphis herself, the City of the White Walls. Around him was a

band of his children and his dearest companions. His luxurious shroud with

its golden trim sparkled in the beams of the sun, which had started its

excursion to the western skyline. He sat smoothly and calmly, his back

resting cushions loaded down with ostrich quills, his elbow installed in a

pillow whose silk cover was striped with gold. The sign of his highness

showed his grand temple and raised look, while his staggering force was

displayed by his wide chest, swelling lower arms, and his glad, aquiline

nose. He bore all the poise of his two-score years and the glorious aura of

Pharaoh. His penetrating eyes ran to and fro between his children and his

companion’s, prior to moving relaxed forward, where the sun was

setting behind the highest points of the date palms.
