Book Name: Zero The Biography
Writer: CHARLES SEIFE
On September 21, 1997, while cruising off the bank of Virginia, the billion-
dollar rocket cruiser shivered to a stop. Yorktown was dead in the water.
Warships are intended to withstand the strike of a torpedo or the impact of
amine. In spite of the fact that it was defensively covered against weapons,
no one had thought to defend the Yorktown from zero. It was a grave
mistake. The Yorktown’s PCs had quite recently gotten new programming
that was controlling the motors. Sadly, no one had recognized the time
bomb lurking in the code, a zero that designers should expel while
installing the product. Yet, for some explanation, the zero was overlooked,
and it remained covered up in the code. Covered up, that is until the
product called it into memory—and choked. When Yorktown’s PC
framework attempted to separate by zero, 80,000horsepower in a split
second got useless. It took about three hours to attach emergency controls
to the motors, and the Yorktown at that point limped into port. Engineers
went through two days disposing of the zero, fixing the motors, and putting
the Yorktown once more into battling trim.
